How to choose shoes for your trousers
Trousers can look completely different when you change the shoes. Start with the pair you want to wear and look at where the hem meets your footwear. The aim is a combination that looks intentional, lets you move comfortably and suits what you are doing that day.

Three outfits to try
Use these combinations as a starting point and adapt them to the pieces you own.

Relaxed wide-leg outfit
Navy wide-leg trousers + cream T-shirt + white trainers + tan tote
A visible white toe connects with the T-shirt and keeps the outfit casual.

A neat everyday combination
Grey straight-leg trousers + blue shirt + black loafers + navy bag
The loafers add a polished finish while the blue shirt softens the darker accessories.

Cropped trousers for cooler weather
Black cropped trousers + burgundy knit + black ankle boots + grey coat
The similar trouser and boot colours make the hem feel connected; the knit supplies the accent.
Check the hem with the shoes on
Try the trousers with the actual shoes, rather than deciding while the trousers are on a hanger. A longer hem can cover much of a flat shoe but show more of a boot or a higher sole. Walk a few steps and sit down. Notice whether the fabric bunches, catches on the shoe or drags on the ground.
If you already own the shoes, keep them as your starting point. You might find that another pair of trousers works better than changing the footwear. A removable turn-up can help you compare lengths, although the fabric and cut will affect how neatly it stays in place.
Give wide-leg trousers a clear finish
With a wide leg, look at the small part of the shoe that remains visible. A simple trainer, a loafer with a defined toe or an ankle boot can give the hem a clear ending. A heel is an option, not a requirement. The important practical check is that the hem stays clear of the ground when you move.
To compare looks, keep the trousers and top the same. Try a low-profile trainer for a relaxed version, then a loafer for a more polished one. You will see how shoe shape and finish change the mood without rebuilding the outfit.
Use straight and cropped legs to show more detail
Straight-leg trousers leave room for many shoe shapes. Loafers, trainers and boots can all work, depending on the width of the hem. If the trousers are cropped, more of the shoe and sock will show, so consider those as part of the outfit rather than an afterthought.
An ankle boot can meet a cropped hem closely, or you can leave a visible gap if you like that effect. For colder weather, try a sock that repeats the trouser colour. A contrasting sock creates a stronger break and can be a deliberate colour detail.
Match the day, not just the mirror
Think about walking distance, weather and the dress code. An outfit that looks good standing still also needs to work on stairs, pavements and a chair. If two shoes look equally good, choose the one you already know feels comfortable for the day's activities.
Before you head out
- Try the trousers with the shoes you will actually wear.
